Freeze-dried and air-dried treats are both made by removing moisture from fresh meat, so they keep without artificial preservatives. The way that moisture is removed is what sets them apart.
How freeze-drying works
Fresh meat is frozen, then placed under vacuum so the ice turns straight into vapour. Because very little heat is used, the meat keeps most of its original shape, colour and nutrients. The result is light, crisp and crumbly.
How air-drying works
Meat is dried slowly with gently circulating warm air until most of the moisture has evaporated. The texture is denser and chewier, similar to jerky.
Which one should you choose?
- For training: freeze-dried treats break into tiny pieces and are quick to eat
- For a longer chew: air-dried jerky gives dogs something to work on
- For fussy eaters: crumble freeze-dried chicken over meals as a topper
- For small dogs and seniors: freeze-dried pieces are lighter and easier to bite
What they have in common
Good versions of both use a single named protein, no grains and no additives. Check the label, and store the pouch sealed in a cool, dry place once opened.
Can't decide? Many of our customers keep both in the cupboard: Freeze-Dried Chicken Breast for training walks and Chicken Jerky for a quiet evening chew.
