Brushing Basics: How Often Should You Groom Your Dog?

Regular brushing does more than keep fur off the sofa. It spreads natural oils through the coat, prevents painful mats and gives you a chance to spot bumps, ticks or dry skin early. How often you need to brush depends mostly on your dog's coat.

Short, smooth coats

Breeds like beagles, pugs and boxers do well with a brush once a week. A gentle pin brush lifts loose hair and leaves the coat shiny.

Medium and double coats

Golden retrievers, corgis, huskies and other double-coated dogs shed all year, and heavily when the seasons change. Aim for two to three sessions a week with a slicker brush, and daily during a heavy shed.

Long, curly or wiry coats

Poodles, shih tzus, schnauzers and doodle mixes tangle easily. A daily brush with a detangling brush keeps knots from tightening into mats.

Five tips for a calmer brush

  • Start when your dog is relaxed, such as after a walk
  • Brush in the direction the fur grows
  • Hold the fur near the skin when working on a knot so it does not pull
  • Keep sessions short. Five minutes is plenty to begin with
  • Finish with a treat so brushing always ends on a good note

Choosing the right brush

A slicker brush handles loose undercoat and everyday tangles, while a soft pin brush is ideal for sensitive skin, puppies and finishing. Browse the Nomly grooming range to find the right match for your dog's coat.
