Dogs sleep for 12 to 14 hours a day, and puppies and seniors even more. That makes their bed one of the most used things you will ever buy for them. Beds do not last forever, though, and a worn-out one can quietly affect how well your dog rests. Here are five signs it is time for a replacement.
1. The cushion has gone flat
Press your hand into the centre of the bed. If you can feel the floor, so can your dog. A flattened cushion no longer supports the hips and shoulders, which matters most for older and larger dogs.
2. Your dog has stopped using it
If your dog has moved to the sofa, the rug or your bed, they may be telling you something. Dogs tend to choose the most comfortable spot in the house.
3. The smell comes back after washing
Over time, oils and moisture work their way deep into the filling. If the cover is clean but the bed still smells, the inner cushion is past its best.
4. There are rips, lumps or loose stuffing
Torn seams and clumped filling are uncomfortable, and loose stuffing can be a hazard for dogs who like to chew.
5. Your dog has outgrown it
Your dog should be able to stretch out fully or curl up without hanging off the edge. If they have grown since you bought the bed, size up.
What to look for in the next one
Choose a bed with a thick, supportive cushion, a raised rim for dogs who like to rest their chin, a non-slip base and a removable, machine-washable cover. Our Cosy Bolster Dog Bed ticks all four and comes in three sizes.
